News - London with Feix & Merlin
One of our top tips for London Design Festival 2013 Julia Feix and Tarek Merlin's progressive, unusual and whimsical work never fails to exude magic and mystery, whether dabbling in set design, re-imagining a 21st Century beach hut or masterminding a retro rollar disco in King's Cross. TMforF&M is a new furniture and lighting design brand borne out of their London based architecture studio Feix&Merlin Architects. Over the past two years they have been working on a capsule collection of furniture, product and lighting designs to be launched for the first time, in a pop-up shop in Covent Garden at London Design Festival 2013. To coincide with the launch, Tarek takes us on a tour of London through his eyes.
Check out TMforF&M 14th to 22nd September. Launch Party 18th Sept.
Where are we?
London, it’s summer, sunny and the weekend.
We’ve got 24 hours here, what should we do?
AM: Get up early, go to the flower market in Columbia Road and have a bacon sarnie with a fried egg and a coffee. Then just mooch. Shoreditch, more coffee, pop up fashion, frozen margaritas at Boxpark, cocktail on the Boundary roof top or sneak into Shoreditch House for a swim.
PM: Over to London Bridge for a bit of South London Love, late lunch at Josẽ on Bermondsey Street, hang out in the sun at the market in Spa road behind Bermondsey Tube. Back up to Dalston. Dinner at the Dead Dolls Club, night cap and a boogie at Dalston Superstore. Done.
I’m new here, any insider tips?
Stay East (or South East)
Share a favourite memory from this place…
A summer day spent sitting on top of Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath, looking back at London enjoying an amazing picnic (mainly consisting of Prosecco)
Where should we have breakfast?
Fernandes&Wells, at Somerset House (or the one in Beak Street)
How should we get there?
Bicycle! The best way to see London, or walk.
A lovely place to stroll?
Along the Regents Canal, from Broadway Market to Islington, or even better: all the way to King’s Cross where we had our pop-up Roller Rink set up this summer. With a bit of luck there'll also be another cute F&M project to see by the time you get there…
AllPress, Redchurch Street. Or Fernandes & Wells
Tell me something surprising
Those street posts in East London are WWI canons. What? Yes, those typical East London bollards are old World War One cannons, including the cannon ball. Most are now replicas, but the ones around Rivington Street are still ancient. And the bollards in Peckham are designed by Anthony Gormley (I’m not actually obsessed with bollards, it’s just you got me going, it’s not my fault.)
What helps you focus?
I wish I’d been alive when…
In the future.
Take me shopping
Dover Street Market.
Show me a building you love
Love is a strong word.
A market place to get lost in?
A great place for cocktails?
Or maybe just a cold beer?
Peckham Pelican – grab a pizza too.
Somewhere to dine in style?
DABBOUS. Although it’s impossible to get a table
What should I order?
Whatever makes you blush.
Somewhere to avoid like the plague…
Oxford Street at Christmas…or any Saturday….or any lunchtime.
A place to let your hair down after dinner
Who shouldn’t I leave without meeting?
Me of course, silly!
