NHS Workers at Aldgate East

Key Workers Living in Aldgate East

MEET OUR KEY WORKERS LIVING IN ALDGATE EAST

In February this year we announced our partnership with YOO Development and Gamuda, and the exciting opportunity that presented itself from the collaboration. Managing three 1-bedroom flats in a residential block on Commercial Road, we are providing these units as an exclusive guardianship for NHS workers, where crucial key workers can live at a significantly reduced rate in Aldgate East.

Our aim is to build a community of kind, hardworking individuals for whom this opportunity will make all the difference. And so, we are therefore delighted to introduce you to our three key workers who are living in this exclusive guardianship.

Aaron, Junior Doctor, Guys and St Thomas’

Meet Aaron, who recently made the decision to move into London to do his part in the Covid-19 crisis. Aaron is currently a junior doctor working at Guys and St Thomas’, but is about to start a placement in ITU at the Royal Free Hospital, so the move to Aldgate East means he will be much closer to his place of work.

“I’m still relatively early in my career, qualifying in 2018 from King’s and working for two years in Cambridge and Bedford. I had initially intended to specialise in Psychiatry, so in the summer of 2020 I started a psychiatric post in Cambridge and Peterborough.

However, as the second wave of the Pandemic picked up, I felt that I could do more good working in acute medicine with Covid-19 patients, so I handed in my notice and took a job in London. I currently work with a team that manages patients too unwell or too frail to be cared for in hospital, going into patients’ homes to start intravenous antibiotics, steroids, fluids and oxygen. I was accepted onto a clinical fellowship at the Royal Free to work in ITU, again hoping to help manage patients who have been hit hardest by Covid-19.

I am still paying the rent of my accommodation in Cambridge, as such, the high rents of traditional properties in Central London would have meant I would be losing money taking on this clinical fellowship. The excellent location and affordable price of this guardianship property relieves me of a significant financial burden and allows me to focus more keenly on my work.”

New Olympia Theatre Announcement

Trafalgar Entertainment agrees 70-year lease of major new London theatre at Olympia

1,575-seat venue will be the largest new permanent theatre build to open in London since the National Theatre in 1976

Full article here

Yoo Capital and Deutsche Finance International (DFI) – developers of the £1.3 billion regeneration of Olympia as a world-leading cultural destination – announce a major agreement with premium international live entertainment business, Trafalgar Entertainment, to run the site’s new 1,575-seat theatre. The theatre will be the largest new permanent theatre build of its kind to open in London since the National Theatre in 1976.

The Olympia theatre agreement is part of a broader ambition by Trafalgar Entertainment to create a venue of national stature as the UK emerges into a new era. Like its neighbour, the Royal Albert Hall, it is set to become an iconic venue for the 21st century. Trafalgar has long recognised the transformational power of culture in making great places, with the nation’s flagship venues an integral part of the new vibrancy and civic self-confidence of towns and cities.

The Olympia venue breaks new ground in theatre design with a stunning, state-of-the-art 1,575 seat auditorium at its heart, designed by award-winning theatre architects, Haworth Tompkins. Informed by Trafalgar Entertainment’s unique experience of theatre operation and the complex demands of modern productions, the theatre offers the very latest innovations in technical facilities.

The expectations of modern audiences have also been anticipated; with a stacked auditorium design meaning every comfortable seat will feel close to the stage and audiences can enjoy the highest standards of ventilation throughout the theatre.  Spacious, glazed front-of-house areas offer far-reaching views across London making a visit to the theatre a uniquely memorable experience. Visitors will enjoy top class bar, hospitality and VIP facilities reinforcing the central role of this new landmark theatre in anchoring the wider Olympia redevelopment.

Currently under construction, the Olympia Theatre is scheduled to open in mid-late 2025. Trafalgar Entertainment’s lease runs for 35 years, with an option to extend for a further 35. They join luxury lifestyle and entertainment brands AEG Presents, Hyatt and citizenM as anchor tenants of the new, 14-acre Olympia redevelopment.

Trafalgar Entertainment beat off strong competition to lease the theatre. Leading theatre entrepreneurs and Joint CEOs of Trafalgar Entertainment, Sir Howard Panter and Dame Rosemary Squire are at the forefront of the UK’s cultural recovery.  They founded Ambassador Theatre Group from scratch and built it into the world’s largest live theatre company while running the company for 25 successful years. Their latest venture – Trafalgar Entertainment – is a leading force behind major theatre investment in the UK and internationally.

In addition to the new Olympia theatre, Trafalgar Entertainment’s enlarged West End theatre – the Trafalgar Theatre – will open in July with Jersey Boys following a major multi-million pound restoration. Trafalgar Entertainment also recently completed the acquisition of HQ Theatres who operate 12 regional venues across the UK, and the major acquisition and restoration of Australia’s iconic Theatre Royal Sydney which opens with Broadway’s favourite multi award-winning musical, Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill in September.

The Olympia agreement comes at a crucial time for the UK’s £100 billion p/y valued creative industries.  It is a strong show of investor confidence in the cultural sector as it recovers from the sweeping economic effects of the pandemic which closed most venues for over a year. Trafalgar Entertainment has shown no signs of slowing down, and is continuing its global expansion into Asia Pacific, with expectations to move into the US market in the coming year.

Chairman of Yoo Capital, John Hitchcox, said: “Sir Howard Panter and Dame Rosemary Squire have a unique track record in exceptional live entertainment and we are delighted to welcome Trafalgar Entertainment as the latest tenants of Olympia. Our vision is to create a new cultural hub in West London and we are looking forward to opening the largest new permanent theatre in the city for 45 years. This will be a big boost for the city’s entertainment industry and the local economy, providing the very best productions for theatre lovers and heralding a new era for theatre and entertainment in London.”

Co-founder of Trafalgar Entertainment, Howard Panter, said: “Looking forward to a new golden age of theatre, Olympia presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity – it is quite simply one of the most exciting new theatres London has seen for many years and we’re delighted to be playing our part as operator. Trafalgar Entertainment is determined to help the return of live entertainment across the UK: we know that audiences want passionately to return to the unique magic that is live theatre. Next month, our remodelled Trafalgar Theatre will open in the West End, Anything Goes plays a summer season at the Barbican, and we’re launching UK tours of The King and I and The Rocky Horror Show. With HQ Theatres opening new productions across the UK in coming months, and the Theatre Royal Sydney in Australia opening its doors for the first time in five years, we’re seeing the mighty strength of the theatre sector as investors and audiences come together to give the people what they want – brilliant world class theatre.”

Cllr Andrew Jones, Hammersmith & Fulham Cabinet Member for the Economy, said:  “Our ambitious Industrial Strategy has helped attract the largest new permanent theatre to be built in London in more than 40 years, creating new jobs for local residents and giving local young people more opportunities in the arts. The iconic Olympia London venue is a vital part of our mission to make Hammersmith & Fulham a global hotspot in culture, STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths) and creative industries. We’re working with our vibrant theatres, concert halls and art galleries to turn H&F into a go-to destination.”

Gavin Neilan, Co-Founder and Co-Managing Partner of DFI, added: “Olympia is a hugely important and iconic venue which has a rich and successful 130-year history, as well as tremendous untapped potential.  Our vision is to truly unlock that potential by creating a vibrant new cultural, leisure and business hub for London, where visitors and office workers can enjoy a diverse spectrum of exceptional experiences and companies can showcase their products.  The number of exciting and high profile occupiers already signed up, and notably, the addition today of Trafalgar as the theatre operator, provide a clear demonstration that our vision to make Olympia’s next 130 years even more successful than its first, is shared.

The £1.3 billion Olympia redevelopment project will create a new cultural hub in west London. Yoo Capital and DFI are also in advanced talks with other potential occupiers with strong interest being shown for the development’s four-screen arthouse cinema, restaurants, shops, cafés and 550,000 sq ft of office and co-working space. The Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC-designed project will also see the enhancement of the existing exhibition halls and 2.5 acres of new public space created.

CBRE and Cushman & Wakefield are joint advisors on the leasing. The Olympia redevelopment is due to open in 2024.

Olympia construction and tenant release

Construction begins on £1.3bn Olympia redevelopment as new theatre tenant revealed.

Full article here

  • Demolition of Olympia Central marks beginning of official construction work to turn historic West London venue into cultural destination
  • Laing O’Rourke appointed for £600m main works construction contract after successful completion of year-long enabling works
  • Trafalgar Entertainment announced as tenants for new theatre – the largest new permanent theatre of its kind to open in London for 45 years

Yoo Capital and Deutsche Finance International (DFI) – together the investors in and developers of the £1.3 billion cultural regeneration of Olympia – today announce two major project milestones. Demolition of Olympia Central begins, signifying the start of the main construction work, as Trafalgar Entertainment is confirmed as the tenant of the site’s new 1,575-seat theatre, agreeing a 70-year lease.

Work is beginning on a total of seven new buildings – including the previously announced citizenM and Hyatt Regency hotels, plus the 4,400 capacity live music venue that will be run by AEG Presents – and will be completed in 2024.

Olympia Central Hall will be demolished while the iconic strucutres of Olympia National and Olympia Grand, both Grade II listed, are being incorporated into the site’s overall redevelopment and will continue to host events while works are taking place.

The works will be delivered by Laing O’Rourke, in a deal worth over £600m, with the construction firm having already completed a year’s worth of enabling works on the site. Utilising Laing O’Rourke’s Design for Manufacture & Assembly capability, the buildings’ walls and floors, and a large proportion of their M&E services, will be manufactured offsite in a factory. This will significantly reduce the number of vehicle movements and operatives on site while at the same time improving safety by taking construction activities into a controlled factory environment.

The developers anticipate a total of 80,000m³ of bulk excavation at the site – the equivalent of 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Due to the size of the site and the number of buildings included in the works, construction will utilise a total of 13 tower cranes and 10 hoists. This includes the tower crane currently installed to construct the Olympia West Hall which, at a reach of 75 metres, is the biggest on a non-infrastructure project in the UK.

Lloyd Lee, Managing Partner at YOO Capital, said: “This is an important and historic moment in the redevelopment of Olympia. Olympia Central first opened in 1930 and now we bid farewell as we usher in an exciting new era for the site and London as a whole. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, works are well on schedule. In fact, from a construction perspective, we have been really fortunate and have taken maximum advantage of the exhibition areas being vacant so everyone on site has been able to spread out and maintain social distancing.”

Gavin Neilan, Co-Founder and Co-Managing Partner of DFI, added:  “Our investment into this project was predicated on our conviction that, while Olympia is a hugely important and iconic venue which has a rich and successful 130 year history, it still has tremendous untapped potential.

“Commencing construction today marks a significant step in realising our vision to truly unlock that potential by creating a vibrant new cultural, leisure and business hub for London, where visitors and office workers can enjoy a diverse spectrum of exceptional experiences and companies can showcase their products.  The number of exciting and high profile occupiers already signed up and the addition today of Trafalgar as the theatre operator, provide a clear demonstration that our vision to make Olympia’s next 130 years even more successful than its first, is shared.”

Further elements of the development are currently underway, with various enabling works already completed:

  • A new energy centre that provides heating for the whole development and cooling for the exhibition areas is nearing completion
  • Structural strengthening to the West Hall exhibition space, to allow for the two-storey music venue to be constructed above, will be completed in the coming weeks
  • Foundations for the theatre building and Olympia Roof Garden have commenced

Laing O’Rourke’s Director of UK Building, Paul McNerney, said: “This marks a significant milestone, allowing our team to progress to the main construction work after a year of successfully delivering significant enabling works, through a pandemic. We are proud of our appointment as construction partner. By harnessing our experience of complex and city-shaping projects together with our focus on modern methods of construction, we look forward to delivering this world-class complex for London and bringing Yoo Capital and DFI’s compelling vision to reality.”

Meanwhile, Yoo Capital and DFI have announced a major agreement with premium international live entertainment business, Trafalgar Entertainment, to run the site’s new theatre. It will be the largest new permanent theatre build of its kind to open in London since the National Theatre in 1976.  The Olympia venue breaks new ground in theatre design with a stunning, state-of-the-art 1,575 seat auditorium at its heart.

Trafalgar Entertainment beat off strong competition for the lease.

Chairman of Yoo Capital, John Hitchcox, added: “Sir Howard Panter and Dame Rosemary Squire have an amazing track record of putting on exceptional live entertainment and we are delighted to welcome Trafalgar Entertainmnent as the latest tenants of Olympia. Our vision is to create a new cultural hub in West London and we are looking forward to opening the largest new theatre in the city for over 45 years. This will be a big boost for the city’s entertainment industry but also the local economy, providing the very best productions for theatre lovers and heralding a new era for theatre and entertainment in London.”

The 14-acre Olympia redevelopment project will create a new cultural hub in West London. Yoo Capital and DFI are continuing advanced talks with other potential occupiers, with strong interest being shown for the development’s four-screen arthouse cinema, restaurants, shops, cafés and 550,000 sq. ft of office and co-working space. The Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC-designed project will also see the enhancement of the existing exhibition halls and 2.5 acres of new public space created.

The Lakes Art Park

Art Park at The Lakes

PRIVATE COTSWOLD ESTATE ESTABLISHES CULTURAL ART PARK

WORK FROM WORLD RENOWNED ARTISTS AND SCULPTORS WILL BE ON DISPLAY

March, 2021 – Private Cotswold estate The Lakes by YOO has announced it will introduce a new cultural concept called The Lakes Art Park, which will be a revolving exhibition of installations by some of the world’s finest artists and sculptors at the estate.

The first installation will be a large white sculpture of an iconic dog, which many may recognise as one of the most famous creations by the world-renowned artist Yoshitomo Nara.

Yoshitomo Nara‘s sculpture Your Dog embodies the spirit of a child’s playmate as well as that of a menacing creature, larger than life. Its huge scale reminds viewers how the world looks through the eyes of a child. Nara’s work has attracted large audiences around the world, from fine-art collectors to commercial consumers, the opportunity to have the sculpture at the estate was one that could not be missed.

“It has always been our wish to encourage new experiences at the Lakes, primarily through outdoor experiences such as swimming, fishing, cycling, climbing, sailing and bushcraft. We are also keen to encourage learning and education with our conservation initiatives, sustainability goals and more recently with our new farmyard and beehives. The Art Park is a cultural extension of these initiatives and we hope that this outdoor live exhibition will further enhance the overall experience for families and young people on the estate,” said The Lakes by YOO Director, Giles Baker.

Sat amongst the secluded natural woodland in the meadow at The Lakes by YOO, residents and their families will be able to enjoy the Art Park, with the aspiration for more sculptures and pieces to be added and changed as the seasons come and go.

Within easy reach of London and international transport links, the Lakes by YOO is home to luxury family residences set within 850 acres of private and glorious parkland lakes, woods and meadows. Prices for homes at the estate range between £2m and £7m, with many available for rental at a cost between £12,000 and £40,000 per week

LOWE ANNOUNCES EXCLUSIVE FLATS FOR NHS WORKERS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GAMUDA & YOO

In these turbulent and challenging times, we have really seen people come together and share heart-warming stories of human connection, kindness and community spirit. One positive, shining light in particular that we can really take away from the last year, is the incredible work that NHS and key workers do for our local community. Praise alone, however, doesn’t do their demanding job justice and at LOWE we are committed to our collective responsibility to support the NHS and make a difference where we can.

We are therefore delighted to announce our partnership with Joint Venture Partners Gamuda and YOO Development Limited, and the really exciting opportunity that arises from this collaboration. Owners of an established residential rental building on Commercial Road, near Aldgate East Underground Station, Gamuda and YOO are reserving 10% of the building’s 1-bedroom flats and will be making them available to LOWE at nil rents, exclusively for NHS workers. This exclusive guardianship opportunity will mean crucial key workers can live in close proximity to their places of work at a significantly reduced rate.

The flats are conveniently located near the Royal London Hospital and the BMI London Independent Hospital (which is supporting the NHS and Royal London at this critical time during the pandemic). In addition, for our crucial key workers further afield, Aldgate and Aldgate East Underground Stations, major bus routes and other means of public transport are on the doorstep of this property.

Both Gamuda and YOO are renowned for delivering projects with a relentless focus on community, high-quality design and the ever-evolving lifestyle needs of occupiers.

A spokesperson for the Gamuda YOO Joint Venture said, “As a responsible corporate citizen, we often speak about our values and how much we care for our community. Now is the time to make good on that commitment. By offering accommodation to NHS workers, on the basis to those who need it most, we hope we can contribute in some small way. We are making available what we can at this stage, and should this prove of assistance, we will examine ways to expand this undertaking in the weeks and months ahead.”

Tim Lowe, Founder & Director of LOWE Guardians, says “We are so excited to offer this exclusive opportunity together with Gamuda and YOO to open up a generous accommodation option for NHS workers in the heart of London. At LOWE, we believe in offering guardianship to provide affordable housing with a social purpose, so we can give back to those who keep our communities safe.”

Tim goes on to say, “We know that many of our guardians are facing a challenging and uncertain future, and from an economic standpoint the consequences of COVID-19 are still unravelling. We have dedicated our company ethos to supporting our Guardians to thrive and succeed as much as we possibly can, and NHS workers deserve our support more than ever.”

We want this community to be full of kind, hardworking individuals for whom this opportunity would make all the difference. As such, and to ensure that the accommodation goes to those in the NHS who need it most, there will be a specific application process with a tailored questionnaire, and the guardians will be chosen by us.

YOO PARTNERS WITH GAMUDA IN ACQUISITION AND REDEVELOPMENT OF ALDGATEPROPERTY

As part of YOO Development’s emerging pipeline of projects across London, Yoo is announcing a joint venture project involving the off-market acquisition of 35a Commercial Road, Aldgate, London E1 1LB in partnership with Gamuda Land. The 36- unit residential block is on Commercial Road, conveniently situated near Aldgate and Aldgate East underground stations at the junction of the City and London’s hip and vibrant East End. The property comes with an existing planning consent for expansion.

Current plans for the site are for it to be re-developed into a community focused micro-living development, it will feature individual studio apartments with communal space and shared amenities such as dining and cooking spaces within a central “common house”, providing a focal point where the community can eat together and socialise. Microliving is seen as part of the solution to address the urban housing crisis in many cities.

YOO Development – which is part of the international YOO Group (the world’s largest non-hotel residential brand) – specialises in intricate mixed-use solutions which capitalise on the Group’s heritage in design and lifestyle focused residential, hospitality and commercial projects; it will also be Development Manager for the project.

John Hitchcox, Founder of YOO commented, “With this acquisition we are expanding our range of investment and development activities; this is part of our wider ambition to challenge and improve modern ways of living, working and playing across London. We are pleased to work with Gamuda on this project, who share our firm belief that real estate is vital in building true community. Core to our strategy is securing assets in superb locations such as this property.”

Ngan Chee Meng, CEO of Gamuda Land commented, “This timely acquisition forms part of our ongoing expansionary investments into London and rest of United Kingdom real estate. We are pleased to partner Yoo, to further our ethos of creating holistic and sustainable communities not only focusing on the home place but also the play place, the work place and the learning place.”

Jonathan Lurie, Managing Partner at Realty Corporation, Gamuda Land’s advisor, adds: “We are delighted to partner with YOO Development, one of the most active and exciting real estate place-makers in the London market to acquire this asset, to reinvigorate and to reposition the units to meet the needs of a dynamic, growing population. With YOO Development, we are looking forward to delivering a high-service product in a compelling location.”

Olympia London teams up with Hammersmith & Fulham Council to increase food deliveries to most vulnerable

Historic venue becomes giant food distribution centre to help local residents impacted by coronavirus crisis

Olympia London’s National hall will be turned into a huge foodbank distribution centre to provide much-needed supplies to people suffering food poverty as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Olympia National has been donated to Hammersmith & Fulham Council, whose Community Aid Network (CAN) will join forces with the Hammersmith & Fulham Foodbank to increase the number of food parcels sent out to local residents in need by around 500%.

Parcel deliveries will be dramatically scaled up from about 160 per week to up to 1,000 per week, ensuring the foodbank can offer a full delivery service to help anyone without the money to buy food.

Deliveries will be undertaken by DBS-registered volunteers, taxi drivers, council staff and people donating their time.

John Hitchcox, Chairman of Olympia London’s owners Yoo Capital, said: “We didn’t hesitate to offer Olympia London as a space for Hammersmith & Fulham Council to use as a food distribution centre. At this time, which has been so hard on so many, we want to help in any way we can and are glad that we can play our part in ensuring the people in our local community get the resources they need to get by.”

Cllr Stephen Cowan, Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, commented: “John Hitchcox, his team at Olympia London and all our volunteers have led the way and lit the path because when the going got tough for thousands of local people during this pandemic, they stepped up and helped out. I’m extremely grateful.”

H&F CAN is being led by Cllr Sue Fennimore, Deputy Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, who added: “Olympia London, the H&F Foodbank and our amazing army of volunteers are helping to make sure people get what they need and nobody is left behind. We want everyone to know they’re not alone, we are on their side, and help will be nearby and on its way throughout this international emergency.”

Lloyd Lee, Managing Partner of Yoo Capital, said: “Olympia London has been a community venue since it opened here in 1886 and we’re glad to be able to provide space for use by a local group working for local people, at a time when we can’t welcome visitors to the site.”
